LGV has received two grants from the American Embassy in Timor-Leste:
1 .Under the first grant, 200 children (7-12 years old) attended education sessions on life skills, waste reduction, sanitation and personal hygiene. They were provided with local nutritious food & information. In addition, 100 youth and women were educated on environmental and economically sustainable development. This grant involved collaboration with other organizations like Haburas, Hasatil and the local school in Maubisse.
2. The Access Alumni project, co-funded by CFLI, helped create youth environmental ambassadors. 20 young and dynamic Timorese benefitted from the program, which included training and initiatives focusing on environmentally sustainable practices.
2015 -2017
Bella Galhos was selected Earth Company’s Impact Hero in 2015 – an award and partnership that provides holistic, tailor-designed support to exceptional change-makers.
Earth Company has been the key fund mobilizer for LGV, successfully raising over $100,000. They connected LGV to well-intentioned and kind-hearted individuals, mainly from Japan, who wanted to contribute to the future of Timor-Leste. EC also provided technical support to LGV in setting up their marketing strategy, communications tools and management structure. Their guidance is helping LGV attain its goal of self-sustainability.
April 2017 – March 2018
Under this program, five women cooperatives are being supported, local education is being provided on nutrition and eleven poor families from Maubisse are receiving monthly food aid in the form of high-energy food supplies. The program is also facilitating the expansion of the LGV organic farm and establishment of an organic compost-making plant. The foundation also developed a 25 minute documentary on Bella’s life.
June – December 2015
Youth Mesh Media helped LGV to set up a Green Intranet for the Leublora Green School (LGS), which was then connected with local elementary school in the town of Maubisse. The intranet contains information on the history of the area, local flora and fauna and tips about environmentally sustainable living. Youth Mesh Media also helped create an area guide for tourists visiting Maubisse. Finally about 25 children linked to LGS were trained on storytelling and on how to use a camera to tell their stories.
April 2017
CFLI has supported LGV in creating cadre of youth ambassadors on environmental issues. This project was a matching program to Access Alumni Grant, under the US Embassy in Timor-Leste, to empower the youth of Maubisse. Youth Ambassador activities included community education, thematic camps, educational visits and pedagogical sessions on key aspects of environment degradation. The project also developed four educational videos. The project ended with a Green Festival held in Dili.
LGV initiatives have been appreciated and applauded by government of Timor-Leste. LGV has worked closely with Ministry of Tourism and SEFOPE on organizing the Maubisse Green Festival, setting up the green restaurant and creating the flower garden. Regular visits by official dignitaries and high level officials from various government ministries helped in building LGV credibility and reputation. Discussions are underway with the government on the expansion of LGV activities to other parts of the country.
